How to Build Confidence and Be Successful

How to Build Confidence and Be Successful

First and foremost, building confidence can be accomplished by anyone.

It may seem like some people are born more self-confident than others and this is only partly true.

Sure our DNA and biology may predispose us to certain attributes of our parents, which may indeed play a part in our confidence.

But, for the most part confidence is a skill that can be learned.

Nature vs. Nurture

Family and upbringing can have a profound effect on the building of one’s confidence.

People who have a more stable family background tend to have a better sense of confidence and self esteem, especially those that have been encouraged and applauded as a child.

Conversely, people from broken homes who experienced more tumultuous childhoods may struggle with gaining self-esteem due to their unhealthy home environments and possible abuse.

These childhood traumas can play a part in how we view ourselves and our abilities.

There is also such thing as a false sense of confidence.

This is where some people are overly confident based on being overly praised or encouraged by family.

Keep in mind that these are starting points when we are young and developing and are not the only factors in developing confidence.

Regardless of our childhood circumstances we are able to still able to build confidence in ourselves.

However, the process might require more time and energy for some rather than others depending on our baseline at the moment.

So how do we build confidence?

The best way to build true confidence is from the work we put in towards our goals and the tasks we accomplish.

Just like most things in life, if we want to be proficient in something we have to practice and work towards it.

The cool part is that the more work we put in, the greater our ability to master it.

This method also works the same way if we want to build confidence.

Firstly, we have to ask ourselves what it is that we would like to be confident about.

We can’t just think to ourselves that I wish I was more confident, we have to focus in on the aspects of life that we want to be more confident about.

We can build confidence through time invested

For example, as entrepreneurs, if we want to be more confident in our ability to run a successful business, than we need to work harder at learning each element of our business.

If we want to be more confident at marketing than we need to spend more time learning about marketing.

We need to read, study, take courses, and pay attention to how other businesses utilize their marketing, etc.

Then we can implement what we’ve learned to achieve results in our chosen field.

The more hours we put into honing our craft the more confident we will become.

When we put the skills we learn into practice and achieve results from them, the more confident we become.

The more we gain ‘wins’ or successes along our journey, the more we believe in our abilities to repeat success.

We can also gain confidence by creating positive momentum.

This is achieved by compiling ‘small wins’.

Winning is addictive

Every positive habit I implement or task I accomplish during the day I consider a small win.

I try to ‘stack’ these wins throughout the day and start as early as possible.

A win can be something as simple making your bed in the morning, making a healthy diet decision, choosing to read/work on a task instead of watching tv, or completing something on your to-do list.

Each positive decision that we make builds positive momentum towards the next decision.

When we can keep the momentum going positively while learning and completing tasks, we can gradually bolster our confidence.

Remember, confidence is our belief in our own ability to perform in any given situation.

So if we train for the situation, and have previously made accomplishments in those situations, than we will be confident that we will perform well again in the given situation.
