Making our beds in the morning is important because it is our first accomplishment of the day, this sets the tone to increase productivity for the day ahead.
Or as I like to call it is our first small ‘win’ for the day.
And as we all know – winning is addictive.
After accomplishing our first ‘win’ for the day chances are we are going to want to keep on winning.
Which means if we start the day with a ‘small win’ we are more likely to carry that momentum of ‘winning’ forward to the next task of the day.
Productivity begets more productivity
In theory one good decision leads to another good decision, which leads to more productive days.
For example, if we wake up in the morning and make our bed we get a ‘high’ from accomplishing our first task of the day which carries over to our next decision.
Since we are already feeling accomplished to start the day we might decide to meditate or exercise.
If we accomplish either of those tasks we might carry forward the positive momentumPositive momentum is progression through the use of positive habits. More into our breakfast decision.
Since we are already feeling good about being productive maybe we will make a green smoothie instead of just grabbing a donut for breakfast.
Compounding our wins leads to positive forward momentum.
As we stack small win after small win we are more likely to continue to make good decisions because we don’t want to break our psychological winning streak.
An organized mind yields better results
I also believe that if we have a tidy and organized environment we will have an organized mind as well, so the act of making our bed will help us start the day feeling more organized and put together.
Don’t just take my word for it.
Out of a study of 500 bed-makers, 82% said they had more productive days after making their bed.
In addition, compared to people who don’t make their bed, bed-makers reported:
“healthier habits, like organizing, eating healthier, setting personal goals, and following their routines and schedules—and they usually almost always get a better night’s sleep”.
So it’s pretty clear – making your bed in the morning will make you more productive.
Now we’ve gotta get you to change those bed sheets.
